President Prabowo’s Merah Putih Village Cooperatives: Eliminating Middlemen and Loan Sharks

President Prabowo Subianto of Indonesia launched the Merah Putih Village Cooperative program in Bentangan Village, Klaten Regency, Central Java, emphasizing the initiative’s aim to boost economic independence and eradicate exploitative practices faced by farmers. As the former Chairman of HKTI, Prabowo has long witnessed issues like post-harvest losses due to inadequate transportation and storage facilities. Furthermore, he highlighted the bureaucratic hurdles hindering farmers’ access to subsidized fertilizers. The President also denounced middlemen who manipulate prices and loan sharks who exploit farmers in urgent need of cash. He sees the Village Cooperatives as a transformative solution to end this cycle of exploitation and empower farmers. Through this program, Prabowo aims to bring about significant change and economic equality for rural communities in Indonesia.
