President Prabowo Subianto’s flagship programs, Free Nutritious Meals (Makan Bergizi Gratis / MBG), People’s School (Sekolah Rakyat), and Merah Putih Village/Urban Cooperatives (Koperasi Desa/Kelurahan Merah Putih / Kopdes) are being praised as “express lanes” to accelerate poverty eradication. These initiatives aim to create job opportunities and enhance economic independence for the people. The Head of the Poverty Eradication Acceleration Agency (BP Taskin), Budiman Sudjatmiko, emphasized that the government’s goal is not only to reduce poverty but to empower individuals and make them economically self-reliant.
Drawing an analogy from football, Budiman explained that the government sees the poor as players who need to be skilled, nourished, and economically empowered. The government’s role is to facilitate the smooth transition towards achieving the goal of eradicating poverty. The Sekolah Rakyat program focuses on breaking the cycle of poverty, while MBG and Kopdes Merah Putih bring economic benefits to entire communities by creating job opportunities and increasing demand for local producers and businesses.
Deputy Head of BP Taskin, Nanik S. Deyang, highlighted how these programs provide tangible hope for independence to poor households. Boarding schools remove children from limiting environments, while MBG supports local producers and small businesses. Additionally, Kopdes Merah Putih plays a crucial role in streamlining supply chains and providing affordable credit to individuals, thus reducing dependency on costly middlemen and predatory lenders.
These initiatives are seen as essential steps towards ending poverty and promoting economic growth. The government’s focus on empowering individuals and communities through education, nutrition, and economic opportunities demonstrates a commitment to building a more prosperous and self-sufficient society.
