Empowering Rural Communities: Merah Putih Village Cooperative

The Koperasi Desa/Kelurahan (Village/Urban Village Cooperative) Merah Putih, an initiative by President Prabowo Subianto, aims to bolster rural economies and enhance community welfare in villages across Indonesia. According to Adita Irawati, Senior Advisor at the Presidential Communication Office (PCO), this program signifies a significant shift towards village-based national development and empowers villagers to manage their resources independently. The initiative, launched on Indonesia’s 80th Independence Day, is seen as a pathway to economic independence for rural communities, moving away from reliance on social assistance towards sustainable economic empowerment. Challenges in meeting basic needs and driving local economies persist in villages and urban areas nationwide, with issues like inadequate storage for fish catch, a high number of MSMEs in debt, lack of healthcare facilities, and limited cooperative services. To tackle these problems, President Prabowo introduced 80,081 Kopdes Merah Putih cooperatives, focusing on job creation, entrepreneurship, and bolstering local production centers sustainably. These cooperatives aim to streamline distribution chains, making essential goods more accessible and affordable to residents. The impact of the program is already evident in places like Cileunyi Wetan village, where the cooperative has alleviated residents’ struggles in accessing basic necessities and managing finances. Residents like Dedi Nurendi appreciate the cooperative as a solution that addresses their economic needs and fosters a culture of mutual cooperation within the community. Joining cooperatives, according to Dedi, is a collaborative effort that benefits everyone involved in creating a more self-reliant and inclusive economy.
