Importance of Physical Activity Spaces in Preventing Children’s Gadget Addiction

Deputy Minister for Population and Family Development (Wamendukbangga) Ratu Ayu Isyana Bagoes Oka has emphasized the importance of parents staying updated on their children’s interests and promoting physical activities to prevent them from getting addicted to games and gadgets. She made this statement during the Double Check discussion on The Role of Family Development in Welcoming a Golden Indonesia 2045, hosted by the Presidential Communication Office (PCO) and Gempita in Jakarta. Isyana highlighted the need for parents to constantly learn and adapt to the online applications that their children use, as kids tend to grasp technology quicker than their parents. She mentioned the allure of “cheap dopamine” that children seek through activities like scrolling on social media or playing online games, which can lead to addiction. Isyana stressed the importance of engaging in sports, outdoor activities, and soaking in sunlight to counter the effects of excessive screen time. Veronica Tan, Deputy Minister for Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection, also shared about the Ruang Bersama Indonesia (RBI) program that provides a safe and inclusive space for women, children, and communities to empower themselves, learn, play, and unleash creativity. Through RBI, Tan aims to offer children access to secure and stimulating environments, encouraging them to participate in traditional games, creative activities, and sports to steer clear of gadget addiction.
