Prabowo Subianto, the current President of Indonesia and successor to President Joko Widodo, delivered a powerful critique of neoliberal economic theory during his speech at the 27th anniversary of the National Awakening Party (PKB). He challenged the idea that wealth concentrated at the top would eventually benefit the wider population, calling it a myth that has never materialized. Prabowo emphasized the importance of Article 33 of the Indonesian Constitution, which outlines the state’s role in ensuring the safety, prosperity, and well-being of its citizens. He highlighted the need for an economy based on mutual cooperation and familial solidarity, as opposed to corporate conglomeration.
Furthermore, Prabowo underscored the importance of addressing basic hardships faced by citizens, stating that democratic ideals hold little value if people struggle with poverty, hunger, and unemployment. He rejected the neoliberal concept of trickle-down economics, arguing that the wealth does not actually trickle down to benefit the majority of the population as claimed. Instead, he advocated for a people-centered economy that serves all citizens, not just the elite.
By reiterating his commitment to inclusive economic policies and rejecting models that perpetuate inequality, Prabowo signaled his dedication to implementing a more equitable and sustainable economic framework for Indonesia.
