President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of Brazil emphasized the significance of the BRICS bloc in upholding the spirit of the historic Bandung Conference during the 17th BRICS Summit held in Rio de Janeiro. The summit, attended by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto as a full member of BRICS for the first time, was deemed as a manifestation of the non-aligned movement represented by Bandung. Lula also addressed the crisis facing multilateralism globally, noting the contrast between the ideals of the United Nations’ establishment and the current challenges. He highlighted BRICS’ role as heirs to the Non-Aligned Movement, emphasizing the rejection of the division of the world into spheres of influence. As Indonesia became a full member of BRICS in 2025, discussions during the summit revolved around political, security, economic, and environmental issues, including reforms in global governance institutions and collaboration in emerging sectors like artificial intelligence governance and climate action. The summit aimed to strengthen multilateral cooperation among BRICS members.
